Opening of Jerome and Martha Markowitz Music Room at Penn State Lehigh Valley

6/27/2012 —

Penn State Lehigh Valley will be celebrating the opening of the Jerome and Martha Markowitz Music Room from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, at the campus in Center Valley.

The music room was a gift to the campus from the children of the late Jerome and Martha Markowitz to honor both of their parents whose lives were deeply rooted in music. Jerome passed away in 1991 and was the founder and chairman of the board of Allen Organ Co., which he started while studying at Muhlenberg College.  Martha, an avid volunteer, spent much of her time assisting at Community Music School in Allentown. Before passing away in 2010, Martha spoke to Penn State Lehigh Valley Chancellor Ann Williams, about wanting to see a joint collaboration between Penn State Lehigh Valley and Community Music School. Since then, Dr. Williams has dedicated herself to turning Martha’s dream into reality.

Some of the room’s features include a state-of-the-art sound system, classroom space, three private practicing booths, a Mac recording lab, and Jerome and Martha’s baby Steinway piano donated by their family.

A mural commissioned by Dr. Williams and painted by Ron DeLong, an instructor of art at Penn State Lehigh Valley, will also be presented to the Markowitz family at this time. The mural is 20 ft. x 4 ft., and will hang outside of the music room in memory of their parents.

DeLong says, “Picasso once said, ‘I paint forms as I think them, not as I see them.’ That pretty much sums up my work on the Music Mural Triptych. I investigated and researched the topic of music, instruments, scores, and then moved forward with the process of creating the mural based on what I learned, what I knew, and what I thought.”

This is an invitation-only event for the Markowitz's’ close friends and family. Light fare will be served, and entertainment will be provided by the Community Music School.
