Brooklyn College professor is next Teaching International guest speaker
Tamara Mose Brown, Ph.D., assistant professor of sociology at Brooklyn College in New York, will present Penn State Lehigh Valley's next Teaching International lecture at 11 a.m., Apr. 19, in room 302 at the campus in Center Valley. Brown will discuss her 2011 book "Raising Brooklyn: Nannies, Childcare, and Caribbeans Creating Community." The lecture is free and open to the public.
A description of her book notes: Stroll through any public park in Brooklyn on a weekday afternoon and you will see black women with white children at every turn. Many of these women are of Caribbean descent, and they have long been a crucial component of New York’s economy, providing childcare for white middle- and upper-middleclass families. "Raising Brooklyn" offers an in-depth look at the daily lives of these childcare providers, examining the important roles they play in the families whose children they help to raise. Tamara Mose Brown spent three years immersed in these Brooklyn communities: in public parks, public libraries, and living as a fellow resident among their employers, and her intimate tour of the public spaces of gentrified Brooklyn deepens our understanding of how these women use their collective lives to combat the isolation felt during the workday as a domestic worker.
Teaching International at Penn State University has developed into a model of global education anchored in curriculum innovation, student-centered research and teaching, and engaged global citizenship. Course lectures, class projects, field trips, public debates, service learning activities, theatrical productions, films, and guest lectures are some of the methods used to help students learn about the world. Enhanced learning opportunities and academic dialogue among students, faculty and staff strengthens the international competencies of students, and fosters collaborative efforts between the campus and various community groups and academic institutions. Teaching International at Penn State Lehigh Valley is a campus-wide academic initiative modeled after the program at Penn State Greater Allegheny which aims to enhance our own campus dynamics and community.
