Local students awarded scholarships to pursue health occupations

3/24/2010 —

Twelve high school students who participate in the Emerging Health Professions program, a dual enrollment program offered by Lehigh Career and Technical Institute, Penn State Lehigh Valley, and Lehigh Valley Health Network, were awarded scholarships by the Pennsylvania Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Foundation, Inc. Forty-one total scholarships of $1,500 or $2,000 were given to students from programs across the state, but these Emerging Health Professions students represented the largest group from one program. The scholarships were presented during a ceremony at HOSA's 31st annual leadership conference held at the Lancaster Host Resort on March 18.

The Emerging Health Professions program for high school seniors combines science courses with hospital experience, and the opportunity to earn up to eight Penn State credits. Students learn about healthcare careers while they participate in job shadow experiences with hospital departments including the emergency room, radiology, operating room, and pediatrics.

"We are proud that so many of our outstanding students were selected to receive these valuable scholarships," said Donna Pavlovic, R.N., instructor of the program for Lehigh Career and Technical Institute. "The scholarships recognize the hard work and achievement of these students and will enable them to continue to pursue careers in their chosen healthcare field."

Pavlovic was also recognized at the ceremony as outstanding HOSA adviser of the year.

The PENN HOSA Foundation, Inc., was established to raise money to support scholarships for talented students that wish to go to college to pursue a health profession. The Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation registered in PA with the Bureau of Charitable Organizations and accepts charitable contributions solely for scholarships to benefit outstanding HOSA scholars.
