10/31/2008 —

Dr. Slava Rotkin, assistant professor of physics at Lehigh University, will serve as guest lecturer for the SAGE November session at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 7  at Penn State Lehigh Valley’s Corporate Learning Center in Bethlehem.

In his lecture, “Nanotechnology Zoo: Don't be Afraid of the Future,” Rotkin will discuss aspects of modern science that fall into the area known as nanoscience or nanotechnology including the driving forces for developing nanotechnology, its goals, and some of the successes. Rotkin, who has done research on the physics of nanoscale objects since 1993, will also explain why and how nanoscience is different from what was learned about the world in the past.

Dr. Slava V. Rotkin is the Frank J. Feigl Junior Faculty Scholar and assistant professor of physics at Lehigh University. He is also editor of Research Letters in Physics. Rotkin was a research fellow at Ioffe Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences (1994-99), then at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology (1999-2004). He has taught at Lehigh since 2004. Professor Rotkin received his Ph.D. from Ioffe Institute (1997) and his M.Sc. (summa cum laude) from Electro-technical University, St. Petersburg, Russia (1994).

He was awarded the Eleanor and Joseph F. Libsch Early Career Research Award (2007), was named a Beckman Fellow (2000), completed the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences fellowship (1995), and received the President and Government Grant for Young Scientists of Russia (1994-96). His name has been included in Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders; Who’s Who in Science and Engineering; Who’s Who Among American Teachers and Educators; and AcademicKeys Who's Who in Sciences Higher Education.

Rotkin is an author/co-author of 90 publications. He serves as a reviewer for a number of funding agencies, including the National Science Foundation, and as a referee for more than 30 scientific journals.
