International Workshop Looks Into Thunderstorms and Lightning Discharges
Dr. Tai-Yin Huang, Assistant Professor of Physics at Penn State Lehigh Valley, is co-coordinator with Dr. Norma Crosby from the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy, of an international workshop entitled, "Workshop on Coupling of Thunderstorms and Lightning Discharges to Near-Earth Space," to be held from June 23-27, 2008, at the University of Corsica, Corte, France.
The workshop goals are twofold: 1) to better understand and identify the effects of thunderstorm processes on the atmospheric composition and dynamics; and 2) to investigate the effects of the various physical processes that couple thunderstorms to the Earth’s upper atmosphere and ionosphere. The workshop will consist of invited tutorials, contributed talks, and an interactive poster session.
The workshop is partly sponsored by Penn State Lehigh Valley, the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy, the University of Corsica, the National Science Foundation, the European Space Agency, the Human Spaceflight and Exploration Directorate, the Topical Team on the Atmosphere-Space Interaction Monitor (ASIM) and the French National Space Agency (CNES) in the context of the TARANIS (Tool for the Analysis of RAdiations from lightNIngs and Sprites) mission.
