The Lehigh Valley Writing Project (LVWP), which is celebrating 25 years as a National Writing Project site in 2014, has announced the new date for its annual Best Practices in Teaching Writing Conference, which was postponed in January due to inclement weather. The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at the Penn State Lehigh Valley campus in Center Valley, Pa.

The conference features interactive workshops and presentations for teachers to share professional teaching practices. The keynote presentation, "Hidden Gems: Naming and Teaching from the Brilliance in Every Student's Writing," will be given by Katherine Bomer. Bomer will also sign copies of her books during the conference.

An internationally known consultant and frequent keynote speaker, Bomer began her consulting career with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. In addition to "Writing a Life," "Hidden Gems," and "Starting with What Students Do Best," she is the co-author of the Heinemann title "For a Better World" (with Randy Bomer). A published poet and essayist, Bomer is also co-author (with Lucy Calkins) of "A Writer's Shelf." In her many presentations, Bomer combines a teacher's practical advice, a writer's love of language, and a plea for social justice.

The cost of the conference is $50 or $40 for Lehigh Valley Writing Project Fellows and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Prepaid registration is required. To register for the conference, or for more information, visit www.lvwp.org or contact Nancy Coco at 610-285-5026 or nxc4@psu.edu.
