Lehigh Valley campus to welcome over 350 new students for 2013-2014

8/22/2013 —

Their cars will not be packed with bedding and mini-refrigerators, but for the more than 350 new Penn State Lehigh Valley students beginning their fall semester, Thursday will be packed with activities to help them start their journey on the right foot as Nittany Lions.

Approximately 250 of these students are scheduled to attend New Student Welcome from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Aug. 22. After registration, they will receive their official Penn State welcome at 9:30 a.m. in room 135 to be followed by mentor groups with campus faculty and student leaders, college meetings, and a welcome picnic at noon.

New to the program this year is the post-lunch keynote speaker, Marcellus Taylor. Taylor is an empowerment speaker and 2012 graduate of Penn State Harrisburg. At Penn State, he was the coordinator for the Fresh START Program, which aims to engage freshmen in community service in the community of Middletown, Pa., after becoming the first Student Liaison for the Borough of Middletown. In addition, Taylor was inspired by the belief to uplift college women of color, and founded the Fresh Women Project which helps female students develop leadership skills through co-curricular activities, coupled with empowerment workshops on relevant topics that woman face today. Taylor was also appointed the coordinator of the Chancellor’s Leadership Access Student Program (CLASP) for freshmen students. In addition to his academic pursuits, Marcellus is making headway into the entrepreneurial world. He is the founder and CEO of Krimson Works LLC, an organization whose mission is to foster an environment of educational empowerment through the medium of training and development. This January, Taylor released his first book, "Don’t Box Me In: 9 P’s of Creative Leadership."
