Panel discussion offers information about study abroad

1/13/2010 —

The Honors program will sponsor a "Penn State Education Abroad" panel discussion from 12:15-1:30 p.m. on January 28 in the auditorium (room 135) at the campus in Center Valley. Light refreshments will be served.

The event is designed to help students learn about the value that participating in study abroad programs can add to their Penn State education. Two speakers, Kevin Arawjo and Tim Brion, will share how their own experiences abroad enhanced their education and their global perspective. Following their remarks, Peter Behrens, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology and campus liaison to Penn State Global Programs, will speak about the opportunities available to current students and how to pursue them.

Kevin Arawjo graduated from Penn State with a bachelor's degree in history in 1989. He received a master's degree in government from Lehigh University. While completing his education, Arawjo studied abroad with Penn State at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia, and also with Kutztown University's summer program with the Diplomatic Academy of Foreign Affairs of the USSR and of the Russian Federation in 1991 and 1994 respectively. Arawjo has served as both an adjunct and full-time instructor of history at Penn State Lehigh Valley and DeSales University. Since 1998, he has operated a successful travel agency specializing in group tours to Europe and beyond. He has traveled to 39 countries, spending the most time in Greece. "Greece is one of my favorite countries and cultures on the planet. I love Greek history and currently teach an introductory course on it to the students at the Lehigh Valley campus.

Tim Brion began his Penn State education at the Dubois campus and completed his bachelor's degree in history at University Park in 1997. Prior to attending Penn State, Brion was a Rotary Exchange Student to Caracas, Venezuela for one year attending high school. From 1997 until 2002 he worked at Lutron Electronics in Coopersburg, PA, and left in 2002 as a sales supervisor in Mexico.  In 2002, he started his own insurance agency with State Farm Insurance.
